What can you update online vs in person?
Only two things can be done fully online on the official UIDAI portal, myAadhaar (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in):
- Update your address – change the address printed on your Aadhaar using a valid Proof of Address document.
- Document Update (PoI/PoA refresh) – re-submit fresh Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents so UIDAI can revalidate your existing details. This does not change your name, date of birth or address; it refreshes the supporting documents on record, which UIDAI recommends for Aadhaar issued 10+ years ago.
Everything else cannot be done online. Corrections to your name, date of birth, gender or language, and any change to your mobile number, biometrics (fingerprints/iris) or photo, require an in-person visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with your original documents. Do not trust any site claiming to change these online – it cannot be done through myAadhaar.
For the official rules and to start a request, always use uidai.gov.in and myAadhaar. If you only need a copy of your existing card, see our Aadhaar card download guide instead.
Online vs Aadhaar Seva Kendra: full comparison
Use this table to decide before you start. If your change is not in the "Online on myAadhaar" rows, you must book a slot at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
| What you want to change | Where it can be done |
|---|---|
| Address | Online on myAadhaar |
| Documents (PoI / PoA refresh) | Online on myAadhaar |
| Name (spelling / correction) | Aadhaar Seva Kendra |
| Date of birth | Aadhaar Seva Kendra (proof required) |
| Gender | Aadhaar Seva Kendra |
| Language | Aadhaar Seva Kendra |
| Mobile number | Aadhaar Seva Kendra |
| Biometrics / Photo | Aadhaar Seva Kendra |
Note: name, date of birth and gender corrections at a centre have limits on how many times they can be made – for example, date of birth and gender can usually be updated only once, and repeat changes are treated as exception updates needing extra verification.
Documents you will need
UIDAI accepts a fixed list of documents for each type of update. The document must be valid, in your name, and clearly readable. For online updates you upload a colour scan or photo (PDF/JPEG/PNG); at a centre you carry the originals.
- Proof of Address (PoA) for an address update or document refresh – e.g. passport, bank statement/passbook, voter ID, ration card, electricity/water/gas bill, or registered rent agreement.
- Proof of Identity (PoI) for a document refresh – e.g. passport, PAN card, voter ID, or driving licence.
- Proof of date of birth for a DoB correction (done only at a centre) – e.g. birth certificate, passport, or a recognised mark sheet/certificate.
- A working registered mobile number – online updates need OTP verification on the mobile linked to your Aadhaar. If your number is wrong or unlinked, you cannot use the online service and must visit a centre.
Always confirm the current accepted-document list on UIDAI before uploading, as the list is revised periodically: uidai.gov.in/en/my-aadhaar/update-aadhaar.html.
Step-by-step: update online on myAadhaar (address + documents only)
These steps apply only to an address update and the Document Update (PoI/PoA refresh) – the only changes the portal supports. Keep your registered mobile number handy for OTP.
- Go to the official portal myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click Login.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha, then verify the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- On the dashboard, choose Update Aadhaar Online for an address change, or Document Update to refresh your Proof of Identity and Proof of Address.
- Review the existing details shown on screen and select what you are updating (address, or the documents to revalidate).
- Enter the new address exactly as it appears on your proof document, or confirm the displayed name/address for a document refresh.
- Upload a clear colour scan of the supporting document (PoA for address; PoI and PoA for a document refresh) within the size/format limits shown.
- Pay the fee if one applies (the address update is chargeable; the online document update is free for now – see the fees section), then submit.
- Note down the Service Request Number (SRN) shown on screen and sent by SMS – you will need it to track the request.
Online demographic updates typically reflect in the Aadhaar database within a few working days, but timelines vary and UIDAI may seek re-verification. The portal is the authoritative source for the latest screens and limits.
When you must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra
Book an appointment and visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if you need to change your name, date of birth, gender, language, mobile number, biometrics or photo – none of these can be done online. The operator captures the change, takes your biometrics where needed, and gives you an acknowledgement slip.
- Locate a centre and book a slot using the appointment tool on myAadhaar or the centre locator on uidai.gov.in.
- Carry the original supporting documents (for example, a DoB proof for a date-of-birth correction).
- At the centre, give your fingerprints/iris for biometric verification and confirm the corrected details with the operator.
- Pay the applicable centre fee and collect the acknowledgement slip carrying your URN or Enrolment ID (EID) for tracking.
Fees: online and at the centre
Fees are set by UIDAI and change from time to time, so treat the figures below as indicative and confirm the current amount on UIDAI before paying.
| Update type | Where | Indicative fee |
|---|---|---|
| Document Update (PoI/PoA refresh) | Online on myAadhaar | Currently free until 14 June 2027 – a deadline UIDAI keeps extending |
| Address update | Online on myAadhaar | Around ₹50 (incl GST) |
| Demographic update (name, DoB, address, etc.) | Aadhaar Seva Kendra | Around ₹75 |
| Biometric update (fingerprints/iris/photo) | Aadhaar Seva Kendra | Around ₹125 |
The free online document-update window has been extended several times – most recently to 14 June 2027 per a UIDAI office memorandum dated 13 May 2026. The same document refresh done at a centre is not free and attracts the standard fee.
How to track your update status
Every request gives you a reference number. Keep it safe – you cannot check status without it.
- Online submissions generate a Service Request Number (SRN).
- Centre or older requests give you a URN or an Enrolment ID (EID) on the acknowledgement slip.
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and open Check Enrolment & Update Status.
- Enter your SRN, or your URN/Enrolment ID, along with the captcha.
- Submit to see whether the update is in progress, approved or rejected.
- Once approved, download your updated e-Aadhaar – see our Aadhaar card download guide.
